Loach and screenwriter Paul Laverty return to Glasgow for a modern-day romance. Casim (Yaqub) is a DJ and second generation Pakistani, born and raised in Glasgow by his traditional, devout Muslim parents. When Casim meets and falls for Irish immigrant teacher Roisin (Birthistle), he knows their relationship is impossible. How will they reconcile duty and desire, Muslim and Catholic, belonging and isolation? Loach and Laverty were moved to make the film after witnessing racist responses to 9/11 in both the U.S. and the U.K.
