Previously filmed in 1937, 1954, and 1976, Cooper’s directorial debut tells the story of a seasoned musician who discovers — and falls in love with — a struggling artist. Cooper directs with admirable economy, but the real draw here is Lady Gaga, incredibly natural and endearing in what is likely to be a breakout acting role.
