A landmark film directed by Lloyd Bacon with musical numbers choreographed by Busby Berkeley, 42nd Street is the archetypal back-stage musical. In the depth of the depression a pair of Broadway producers attempt to stage a hit musical. In doing so they offer hope and opportunity for struggling but hopeful young performer Peggy Sawyer, if only they can get back to Broadway a hit. Contains the dangerously tuneful, ‘You are Getting to be a Habit with Me, ‘Shuffle of to Buffalo’ and of course ‘42nd Street’.

Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO.
