Underbank Studios: Belonging

Belonging is a group exhibition that showcases the work of eighteen artists from Stockport-based collective, Underbank Studios. Through multiple mediums and practices each Underbank Studios artist explores their unique and personal sense of belonging.

The exhibition features a vast collection of responses that vary from artist to artist. Collectively, the exhibit includes bright and conceptual drawings, paintings, prints and ceramics. Belonging raises a dialogue between the individual and their surrounding environments—whether they be physical spaces, inward reflections, fantasy worlds, or digital realms. Community and ‘feeling at home’ is important to the studio collective.

The female-led organisation strives to create an inclusive space where people feel welcome and accepted. Belonging echoes the studios inherent value of connection, which is intrinsic to how they work. The exhibition is an extension of the studio’s intentions as a physical arts space, and is also a homage to the feeling of being a part of the arts community within the Stockport area.

About Underbank Studios

Underbank Studios CIC is a community-focused, female-led arts organisation creating opportunities for artists and local people to develop existing practices and engage in art activities. Founded in early 2021 by Luca Shaw and Heather Chambers. The studio enables development of existing arts practices and engagement in art activities by providing an accessible programme of events and opportunities. Based in Stockport, the shared and supportive studio space houses up to 20 artists. The studio hosts workshops, exhibitions and events. These are facilitated by the resident artists and their collaborators. Underbank Studios is an inclusive community building space that encourages artists and locals to support each other, experiment, and collaborate
