Presenting a diverse body of work, artist Suzanne Bethell, celebrates the power of colour to excite the eye, engage the heart and awaken the soul. Suzanne’s practice is expressive, intuitive and process-led, with many of her works being created when she is in a state of ‘flow’.
Granada Foundation Galleries 1 & 2
This exhibition brings together paintings, unique screen prints and assemblages bound by lively palettes.
On level one, large scale, abstract, expressive paintings are presented alongside Suzanne’s most recent, mixed media Flow series. This work is infused with movement through a combination of paint, collage and energetic mark making. Together these pieces chart emotional responses to moments in time. They celebrate abundance, joy and the rejuvenating qualities of walking in nature and a new found sense of freedom.
Gallery two features large scale acrylic and spray painted works on canvas, an Urban series of screenprints and smaller assemblages on paper – all using neon colours. The screen prints take inspiration from the architecture of New Islington, Ancoats and the street art of the Northern Quarter, a theme continued in the collaged assemblages, inspired by the Manchester skyline that can be seen from the windows of Suzanne’s Stockport studio.
Created on the day the UK went into the first lockdown in March 2020, Lucky Dip is intentionally garish. With its hints of fairgrounds and circus tops, Suzanne sees Lucky Dip as a reminder that significant life opportunities result from the random nature of our birth, its particular time and location, and references the balance of chance and choice which shapes our destiny, so pertinent at this time.
About Suzanne Bethell
Suzanne Bethell is a Manchester artist who recently completed a bOlder talent development programme with Castlefield Gallery, Manchester. In 2021 she was a finalist at Manchester’s inaugural HOME open exhibition and in 2020 was shortlisted for the national printmaking Flourish Award.
Since her first solo exhibition at the Pankhurst Centre, Manchester in 1995 she has exhibited and sold work widely throughout the UK. Her work is in private collections nationally and internationally. An associate member of Castlefield Gallery, Manchester and Hotbed Press, Salford, her studio at Hallam Mill, Stockport, overlooks the Manchester skyline.
