Formally trained as a painter, Carolee Schneemann emerged in the early 1960’s New York artworld of experimental film, music and theatre and developed a discourse on the body, sexuality and gender. Cornerhouse will exhibit a selection of work, covering her career from early photoworks to a new video installation. The history of this work is characterised by research into archaic visual traditions, of pleasure wrested from suppressive taboos and the body of the artist in dynamic relationship with the social body.
