Alicja Mrozowska: Unpacking

Unpacking sheds light on emotional complexities of migration, family and identity that come together when visiting ‘home’.

This set of oil paintings on paper is both British and Polish, an adolescent Northerner’s reflections on her disoriented childhood self. Each piece is a self-portrait alongside a portrait of a relative, mid-exchange, during Alicja’s annual visits to Poland. Together the pieces are a map of two homes blending together – not necessarily smoothly and never completely.

This timeline of reintroductions is fuelled by emotions only family can bring out. Unpacking is the million-złoty question: when are you moving back?

Unpacking is a new piece of work commissioned by HOME especially for Push Festival 2019.
