What Makes a Contemporary Visual Artist?

This introductory level course is a way into looking at what makes a contemporary visual artist and the art world they inhabit. The course introduces a selection of internationally renowned artists from different perspectives including notions of celebrity, humour, politics and social consciousness.  The course also considers the various influences on their practice – commercial forces, prizes, curators and institutions, audience engagement and the media. Artists discussed include Jeremy Deller, Ai Weiwei, Ryan Trecartin, Tracey Emin, and Susan Philipsz. The course includes a screening of Make Your Own Damn Art, a documentary about the artist Bob & Roberta Smith followed by a Q&A with the artist himself. Accessible, with plenty of group debate, this course offers a way into talking about contemporary artists and the current art world.
