The Lonely Road: Women and Rock

All I Want is the first track of Joni Mitchell’s album, Blue (1972) and shows her to be ‘on the road’ – typically the male domain of rock, evocative of Jack Kerouac and Route 66. There are other women significant to rock but, as Air Guitar indicates, rock is still a male domain. Sheila Whiteley, Chair of Popular Music at Salford University, will be discussing Air Guitar in reference to women in rock and why rock remains a heavily gendered and male-dominated world. Sheila Whiteley has published a number of books and articles around popular music, including The Space Between The Notes: Rock and the Counter-Culture (2000) and Women and Popular Music: Sexuality, Identity and Subjectivity (2000).
