The Bigger Picture National Commissions Launch

The Bigger Picture presents four major new commissions of exceptional public realm work from international artists/ collaborations: Perry Bard, Juneau Projects, susan pui san lok and Esther Johnson. This touring programme of work, commissioned in collaboration with partners Enter_, Lumen and Site Gallery pushes boundaries in the use of public space, audience participation and interaction.

Join us for a drinks reception in Gallery 3 at 19:00 before going to the All Saints screen for a screening of the new commissions at 20:30.

The four works are wide ranging in their subject matter and style but all share a fresh approach to work on screen, and an awareness of the public space in which they will be screened. Both Perry Bard’s 2008: Man with a Movie Camera and susan pui san lok’s DIY Ballroom / Live rely on audience participation to create and complete their works. Bard invites people across the globe to contribute to an ambitious attempt to recreate all 67 minutes of Vertov’s classic 1929 Movie, and lok invites audiences closer to home to take part in a flashmob-style ballroom event, taking place in synergy with the screening of her work. Esther Johnson’s Celestial makes use of exquisite meteorological images, inspiring us to look at the drama taking place in the sky above and around the outdoor screening of her work, while Juneau Projects Honourable Ordinaries, produced with a group of young people, creates heraldic iconography for the 21st century, that function as personalised banners, signs and flags within the locations they are shown.
