An online soap opera set between Brazil and the UK.
Telenovela is the latest project from Manchester and São Paulo-based artist Lowri Evans, blurring fiction and documentary to create an online art soap opera.
Set between Brazil and the UK, Telenovela spans 16 short episodes made out of Lowri’s life and sketchbooks (and the gap between them). As with all good soap operas, viewers can expect heartache, adventure and cliffhangers, alongside explorations of memory, fantasy and reality.
All episodes are available to watch on HOMEscreen.
If binge watching is more your style, Lowri will host a screening of all the episodes back to back in our cinema on Sun 5 Feb at 18:00.
Much of the story is set in São Paulo, and the theme music for the series is an original piece by Brazilian musicians Cristinas Cantam. The online version of Telenovela will also be available with Brazilian Portuguese subtitles, translated by writer Leda Cartum. Northern-based digital creatives are working on the project including Lisa Mattocks, Holly Close, Laura Skilbeck, Ella Otomewo and LGBTV. The soundtrack is composed by Andrew Heath.
As part of the project, Lowri has also been mentoring two associate artists – Mark Croasdale and Audrey Albert – who will also share short films as part of the launch event.
Telenovela is commissioned by HOME and Islington Mill. It is supported using public funding by Arts Council England. Poster design by Lisa Mattocks.
