The transition from dictatorship to democracy prompted conflicting emotions including regret, resentment, confusion and relief, as well as new sentiments arising from the expression of previously suppressed identities that were regional, political, sexual, young and different to anything seen in Spain and Spanish cinema before. This illustrated talk traces a path through La Transición to show how citizenship in Spain was re-imagined in terms of new sentiments of belonging to communities that had little to do with the state.
Led by Professor Rob Stone, University of Birmingham.
The talk is followed by a screening of Pedro Almodóvar’s first feature Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón.
