Bring your students along to our Spanish GCSE study morning where they can engage with Spanish film, language, and culture outside of the classroom.
The session will be led by Dr Carmen Herrero, Reader in Hispanic Studies and Innovator Educator Scholar at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is actively involved in film and language education through workshops for students and language teachers. She is the co-founder and co-director of FILTA (Film in Language Teaching Association).
This study day will include a screening of the film La Suprema. You will look at the themes of youth, precarity, solidarity, resilience and hope, community spirit, Afro Colombian identity, family and music.
Carmen Herrero will present the film in Spanish, providing relevant information on the film and its literary, social and political contexts, as well as introducing key vocabulary on these topics.
The screening will be followed by a series of language exercises in Spanish including film analysis and discussion of the main themes in the film and its characters.

Dir Felipe Holguín Caro/Colombia/2023/83mins/in Spanish with English Subtitles
In 2001, in a town erased from maps where electricity has not yet arrived, a girl dreams of boxing. Laureana is an Afro-Colombian teenager who lives in La Suprema, a remote village in the Colombian Caribbean region. When she learns her uncle will box for the world title and it will be broadcast live on TV, she and the community will do everything to watch the fight, while battling oblivion. The odds are against them, but inspired by Laureana’s irrepressible energy this mission might just put La Suprema on the map.
A spirited and moving drama with a lively soundtrack, Felipe Holguín Caro’s debut feature captures the vibrancy of daily village life and the power of solidarity and collective effort in the face of overwhelming odds.
This event is for teachers and students, teachers may not attend without students.
