Tue 26 Nov, 10:00 – 15:00

Recommended for Spanish A Level or equivalent level Spanish

Bring your students along to our Spanish A Level study day where they can engage with Spanish film, language and culture outside of the classroom.

The session will be led by Dr Carmen Herrero, Reader in Hispanic Studies and Innovator Educator Scholar at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is actively involved in film and language education through workshops for students and language teachers. She is the co-founder and co-director of FILTA (Film in Language Teaching Association).

This study day will include a screening of the film La maternal. You will look at the themes of youth, teen motherhood, family, friendship, education, music and dance.

Carmen Herrero will present the film in Spanish, providing relevant information on the film and its literary, social and political contexts, as well as introducing key vocabulary on these topics.

The screening will be followed after lunch by a series of language exercises in Spanish including film analysis and discussion of the main themes in the film and its characters.

What does it mean to be a mother, or a child? Age 14, Carla is both. A wild child living with a toxic single mother, Carla is shocked to discover she is at least five months pregnant. Transferred to a Barcelona ‘maternal’, a shelter for young mothers at risk of social exclusion, she meets other teens in the same situation, taking care of their babies with the help of social workers.

At first hermetic and distrustful, Carla makes uneven progress as she learns to be a parent while yearning to be a child again. Afraid of being as bad a mother as her own, little by little she understands her mum’s struggles, and motherhood eventually brings them both together.

This event is for teachers and students, teachers may not attend without students.
