PlayMakers Takeover 2021

Join Box of Tricks for our first ever day-long PlayMakers Takeover as we bring together Northern playwrights and theatremakers to connect, collaborate and create. Expect creative conversations at our Culture Café, a practical Masterclass for playwrights interested in writing from lived experience, a ToolBox Workshop for stage designers and a cinema screening of David Judge’s acclaimed one-man stage play SparkPlug.

• 10:30am ~ PlayMakers Culture Café
  Join Box of Tricks and our family of supported writers for a coffee and a chat about our PlayMakers Network for Northern playwrights and theatremakers. Meet the Box of Tricks Team and add your voice to our plans for the future.
• 12pm ~ PlayMakers Masterclass
  Writing from lived experience: A 60-minute practical workshop led by Box of Tricks’ Artistic Director Hannah Tyrrell-Pinder and playwright David Judge (SparkPlug) exploring the process of using lived experience and autobiographical detail as a starting point for creating theatre.
• 2pm ~ ToolBox Workshop Stage Design
  Join us for a 60-minute creative workshop for Northern stage designers led by Box of Tricks’ Associate Designer Katie Scott with Sascha Gilmour exploring their experience of designing for stages big and small. Katie and Sascha will launch a North West Regional Heart as a part of Society of British Theatre Designers’ Regional Hearts programme and discuss how it will support local design talent now and in the future.
• 3:30pm ~ SparkPlug Screening
  Cinema screening of Box of Tricks’ acclaimed stage production SparkPlug (filmed at HOME in 2019) – a punchy, poetic exploration of family, race, identity and love – followed by a Q&A with playwright/performer David Judge.
