European arthouse and festival audiences may be familiar with the films of Taiwan New Cinema auteurs, such as Hou Hsiao-hsien, Tsai Ming-liang and Edward Yang. However, since the revival of popular film production in the territory in the mid-2000s, Taiwanese cinema has been breaking box office records at home and in the region, yet remains relatively unseen on European screens. This talk from Dr. Felicia Chan (RCUK Fellow in Film, Media and Transnational Cultures, The University of Manchester) will survey several contemporary Taiwanese films and explore the limitations such a politics of selection imposes upon our understanding of national and cultural cinemas.
