In this introductory talk, Andrew Moor traces Powell and Pressburger’s lifelines to the point when they converge: October 1938 in Alexander Korda’s office at London Films (Korda will contract them to collaborate on The Spy in Black.) Key features of their work will be covered from the formation of their company ‘The Archers’ to important themes and styles throughout the partnership: borders exile and nationhood, pastoral romance, location work and the highly controlled artifice of the ‘composed film’. The vital contributions of their regular collaborators, who were all considered to be ‘fellow-Archers’, will also be discussed
Part of Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell + Pressburger, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network.
