Caste has been one of the defining characteristics of Indian societies, yet Indian cinema lags in its representation. Using film clips as examples, this talk looks at the representation of caste in Indian cinema. With reference to films that do address the caste system, this presentation looks at the issue of under-representation of Dalits (“untouchables”) on the Indian screen, mirroring the marginalisation of nearly 25% of Indians in popular culture.
