Midnight Cowboy: Hollywood Renaissance and US Underground Cinema

Like other Hollywood Renaissance films, Midnight Cowboy has been discussed in detail in terms of its links with the European art film of the 1960s. This talk will look at the film’s lesser known connections to the US underground cinema of the 1960s and especially Andy Warhol.

Led by Yannis Tzioumakis, Reader of Film and Media Industries and Gary Needham, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies, both at the University of Liverpool.

Yannis Tzioumakis is Reader of Film and Media Industries at the University of Liverpool. He is the author and editor of many books including The Hollywood Renaissance: Revisiting American Cinema’s Most Celebrated Era (2018) in which he also contributes a chapter about Easy Rider.

Gary Needham is Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at the University of Liverpool. He is currently writing a book on Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick and has written on Midnight Cowboy and its relationship to US underground cinema for as part of the The Hollywood Renaissance: Revisiting American Cinema’s Most Celebrated Era.
