Key Concepts in Film and Media Studies: Narrative and Genre

Recommended for: AS Film & Media

Capacity: 158 places

Written and directed by Richard Ayoade, one of the faces of The IT Crowd, Submarine makes an effective case study of narrative and genre for A Level Media or Film Studies. Submarine utilises many of the conventions of the teen comedy-drama whilst establishing a distinctive directorial style and narrative structure. The study day will cover detailed aspects of film form and explore the influence of Ayoade’s background in television comedy (writing for series such as Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace), as well as considering it more widely as a British film in its institutional and cultural context.
