Irish Study Morning (Maidin Scannáin Gaeilge)

The session includes an introduction in Irish and a screening of Daniel O’Hara’s 2003 short Yu Ming is Ainm Dom and Bob Quinn’s POITIN.

Made in 1977, POITIN was the first feature film to be made in the Irish language and it brings together three of Ireland’s finest actors: Cyril Cusack, Donal McCann and Niall Toibin. Post-film discussion will focus on themes of language and heritage.

Beginners to advanced level. Irish language learners welcome.

Both films will be screened with English subtitles.

This session will be led by Dr Eithne Ní Ghallchobhair, an Irish writer and teacher who is currently working on the Modern Irish Dictionary with the Royal Irish Academy.

This year’s Irish Study Morning (Maidin Scannáin Gaeilge) is led by Dr Eithne Ní Ghallchobhair, Irish writer and teacher currently working on the Modern Irish Dictionary. This firm favourite in our calendar includes an extended introduction, a screening of Cré na Cille (12A) (with English subtitles) and a post-screening discussion in Irish and English. Cré na Cille is a film adaptation of a major contemporary Irish novel shot to commemorate a hundred years since the birth of the book’s author Máirtín Ó Cadhain.

We are also pleased to welcome special guest Ciarán Ó Cofaigh, producer of Cré na Cille for a Q&A session.

Supported by the Government of Ireland.
