Enjoy this beautiful solo performance by Hiva Shairfi during her intimate live performance of what many Iranians call the king of traditional Persian instruments; the Tar.
The tar is a long-necked, waisted lute family instrument, used by many cultures and countries including Iran Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Georgia, Tajikistan, Turkey, and others near the Caucasus and Central Asia regions. Tar is considered the newest musical instrument of Persian folklore and only dates back around 250 years. The stunning melodies performed on tar have long been considered useful to cure headaches, insomnia and sadness. Listening to this instrument was believed to induce a quiet and philosophical mood, compelling the listener to reflect upon life. Its solemn melodies were thought to cause a person to relax.
