Times: 10:00 – 13:00
Join us for our French GCSE study morning, led by Isabelle Vanderschelden, Independent film scholar and Educator, co-founder of Filta (Film in Language Teaching Association.
This study day aims to offer students the opportunity to see a recent film illustrating the diversity of Frenchy cinema. Isabelle will introduce the film in a mixture of French and English, providing relevant information on the contextual background of the film and its production. It will also introduce key vocabulary/phrases to understand the French dialogue and help students to give personal opinions on a film in French.
The screening will be followed by a range of language exercises in French around the main characters and plot as well as themes of childhood, family, work, belonging and discovery of another culture. The session will also address some mise en scene strategies, in particular subjective point of view and generation of suspense. Students will be encouraged to exercise their visual literacy and critical thinking skills in relation to the film.
Bring your students to HOME for a fun day out where they can engage in French culture, language, and film outside of the classroom.
Screening: Àma Gloria (PG)
Dir Marie Amachoukeli/ France 2023/84 mins / French with English Subtitles
Cléo (an exceptional performance by six-year-old Louise Mauroy-Panzani) loves her nanny Gloria more than anything. When Gloria suddenly has to return home to Cape Verde to look after her own children, Gloria invites Cléo to visit her and the two have to make the most of their last summer together.
Marie Amachoukeli’s outstanding feature was the opening film of Cannes Critics’ Week 2023 and has been an audience favourite at film festivals across Europe including London and Dublin. It is produced by Céline Sciamma’s regular producer Bénédicte Couvreur (Petite Maman, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Girlhood).
This event is for teachers and students, teachers may not attend without students.
