French A Level Study Day: The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan

Wed 6 Nov, 10:30 – 15:00

Recommended for A Level or equivalent level French

Join us for our French A Level study day, led by Isabelle Vanderschelden, Independent film scholar and Educator, co-founder of Filta (Film in Language Teaching Association.

This study day aims to offer students the opportunity to see a recent film which, this year, revisits a classic French historical novel and period while illustrating the vitality of the French film industry and its leading stars. Isabelle will introduce the film in French, providing relevant background information on the historical setting of the film and its production contexts including information on the French film industry after the pandemic. Key vocabulary/phrases to discuss a film critically in French will also be provided.

The screening will be followed by a range of language exercises in French around the main characters and plot, the revisiting of genre conventions in heritage films and star performances. The session will also address some mise en scene strategies in super productions. Students will also be encouraged to exercise their visual literacy and critical thinking skills in relation to the film.

Bring your students to HOME for a fun day out where they can engage in French culture, language, and film outside of the classroom.

Screening: The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan
Dir Martin Bourboulon / France 2023/ 121 mins / French with English Subtitles

D’Artagnan, a spirited young man, is left for dead after trying to save a young woman from being kidnapped. Arriving in Paris, he tries to find his attackers, but this quest leads him to the heart of a real war where the future of France is at stake. Allied with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, three musketeers of the King with an audacious contempt for danger, D’Artagnan faces the dark machinations of the Cardinal of Richelieu. But it is when he falls madly in love with Constance Bonacieux, the Queen’s confidante, that D’Artagnan truly puts himself in danger. For it is this passion that leads him into the wake of the one who becomes his mortal enemy: Milady de Winter.
