Florian Dombois

Florian Dombois talks about what inspires and influences his practice.

Florian Dombois’ works explore scientific phenomena through audification of earthquake data. For his project Auditory Seismology, Dumbois compressed a seismograph time data, sending the calculated signals to amplified speakers. The stunning result is, in a word, the sound produced by an earth tremor, making audible the inaudible. Florian Dombois lives in Cologne and Berne, and, since 2003, is Head of the Y Institute for Transdisciplinarity at Berne University of the Arts. He studied geophysics and philosophy in Berlin, Kiel and Hawaii, and received his PhD in Cultural Studies with Hartmut Böhme.
