DD Day 2016 will showcase two exciting new donations of experimental art films to the Delia Derbyshire Archive, for which Delia provided the music, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. We will also present two new creative responses to the archive by artists Mary Stark (film/live art) and Mandy Wigby (music).
Films
One of These Days (U)
NL 1973, 30mins
Dirs Elsa Alexandra Stansfield, Else Madelon Hooykaas
One of These Days was made as an image impression of a ‘person of today’ Marte Röling, an Amsterdam designer. The sounds throughout the day play an important role. Marte’s reactions are stimulated by the people around her and what they say. At the end she realises her dream to decorate an ocean liner with favourite form: mouths. Music by Delia Derbyshire.
Two Houses (U)
UK 1980, 41mins
Dir Elisabeth Kozmian
In 1977 two architects bought derelict houses in Kentish Town, North London and set out to renovate them. Being very different people, their ways of working and approach were completely different. Symbolically, this film is about the process of renewal, about change overcoming decay, and courage and hard work. On a more pedestrian level, the film is about people converting their houses, an occupation very dear to British homeowners who are always tinkering with do-it-yourself. For this film Delia composed a piano score.
Performances and new commissions
David Butler’s new audio collage, compiled from material from the Delia Derbyshire archive, will be paired with live visuals by artist Mary Stark. The Architects of Rosslyn (producer/composer Mandy Wigby and composer/musician Howard Jacobs) will perform a live soundtrack created in response to the Delia Derbyshire archive, to a collage of films by artist and ‘movician’ Di Mainstone.
During the day, there will also be improvised pop-up performances, including live music from Janet Wolstenholme.
