Although he came late to his craft, writer-director Edward Yang made an almost immediate impact with his contribution to the portmanteau feature In Our Time (1982) which is credited as the film that launched the influential New Cinema Movement in Taiwan. Yang and director Hou Hsiao-hsien are the most internationally recognised of Taiwan’s auteurs. Yang’s is a cinema concerned with issues of contemporary, urban, middle-class, increasingly Westernised Taiwan, and his narrative and visual style reflect this, employing a modernist filmmaking aesthetic combined with an intensely humane approach to character.
In 2022 HOME screens two of Edward Yang’s masterpieces, A Brighter Summer Day on Sun 11 Sep and Yi Yi on Sun 23 Oct.
