Documentary 101 with Northern Heart

A one-day workshop that will take you through each step of your first documentary journey.

Are you a new documentary maker looking to develop your skills? Or do you currently work in fiction or journalism, have a great documentary idea but not sure what to do?

Join award-winning documentary makers Natasha Hawthornthwaite and Scott Bradley of Northern Heart Films for a one-day workshop that will take you through each step of your first documentary journey; from finding your idea to distributing your work.

During the day Natasha and Scott will cover the entire documentary process, from finding and developing ideas, interview techniques, documentary film equipment and distribution. They’ll share their insights into documentary filmmaking, revealing their secrets to crafting compelling stories and building trusting relationships with their subjects.

At the end of the day, you will have gained more confidence in interviewing contributors, presenting and pitching your projects, and navigating the production and post-production processes. You’ll also gain a clearer understanding on film festivals and how to distribute your completed documentary more effectively.

About Northen Heart

Northern Heart Films is a documentary film company in Wigan, currently supported by the BBC Small Indie Fund. They have a number of original documentaries In development with some of the UK’s biggest broadcasters. Northern Heart also supports documentary filmmakers from working-class backgrounds every year with funding and mentoring through their Doc Fund.

Attendees must:

  • Be over 18
  • Come with a documentary idea to work on and develop during the workshop.

The workshop will run 10:30 – 16:30 with an hour lunch break around 13:00. Feel free to bring your (cold) lunch, there is a fridge in the space.

Additionally, Natasha and Scott will be available for one to one surgeries from 16:30 – 17:15 on a first come first served basis. Sign up for these will be on the day.

Suggested price for this event is £20.
