Between 3: Commissions by Ruth Barker, Helen Collett and Lois Macdonald

Between is a season of new performance art commissions taking place in our empty gallery spaces in the time between exhibitions. This final edition of Between presents new work by Glasgow-based artist Ruth Barker and Manchester-based collaborative artists Helen Collett and Lois Macdonald.

For Between 3, Ruth Barker will present Mouth Open In An Open O in Gallery 3. The artist has composed and memorised a richly poetic text, part epic, part personal mythology, which she recounts as a focused, charged, encounter with ritual storytelling. Ruth has worked with fashion designer Carmel O’Brien to produce a bespoke garment for the performance that will emphasise the physical, sculptural quality of the vocal work. As well as recent exhibitions in Scotland, London, Rotterdam, Tel Aviv, and New York, Barker’s performance works have been included in the ReMap festival, Athens; and Glasgow International festival of contemporary art (GI).

Helen Collett and Lois Macdonald will undergo their performance YouI fig.(iv) in Gallery 2.  There is no way to view this performance directly, only through the secondary systems in place within the gallery walls and online. Become part of the performance at #helen_lois. As in previous works, the artists continue to explore the concept of personal and professional communication at all levels, in a choreographed performance of mirrored motions. Communication becomes the focus and the planning process becomes transparent. Working independently and together as artists and curators, Collet and Macdonald have been responsible for several ambitious events in Manchester, including Mill24 and Lionel Dobie Project.

Between is presented in partnership with MIRIAD and The International3. Curated by Louise Adkins, associate curator The International 3. Funded by Arts Council England.
