Anne Boleyn

Play Reading series presents

Play by Howard Brenton

Backgound:

Henry VIII’s second wife, was executed on 19th May 1536, her body and head placed in a wooden chest beneath the small Chapel of St Peter and Vincula. An Anne Boleyn cult is fast developing, with followers mainly adolescents and ageing romantics. Her life was one of love, death and betrayal but, somehow, it leaves a feeling of unrest behind.

She was found guilty of adultery, incest and treason. At her trial she was accused of having an incestuous relationship with her brother, being a witch and of having slept with a hundred men whilst married to the king.

While still in the king’s favour she was a very powerful woman. But, when the King’s affections toward her ceased, she was labelled ‘the Concubine’. It was seen to be the work of the devil when she could not give the King an heir to the throne. However she was to be the mother of the future Queen Elizabeth 1.
