A Cinema of Two Cultures

This course will look at a wide range of films made by filmmakers who have themselves experienced two cultures. The key film will be Mira Nair’s THE NAMESAKE (2006), which presents the story of a couple who marry in Calcutta and emigrate to the US. The story follows this first generation and their children, born in USA, who return to India as tourists. What kinds of issues are raised by such a story? Are they the same or different from those which concern families and individuals involved in other forms of migration or who recognise themselves as part of a ‘diaspora’? There are so many films that we can consider in this way that the course is sure to offer something for everybody, so do come and have your say.
