In this month’s HOME Film Podcast we are super excited to introduce our new host Karen Gabay, plus we delve into some November 2021 film highlights with HOME’s Head of Film Rachel Hayward and Senior Visiting Curator Andy Willis.

We take a deep dive into the upcoming Taiwan’s Lost Commercial Cinema: Rediscovered and Restored season, with special guest and season co-curator Chris Berry, as well as a closer look at the Mike Leigh Retrospective season, coming up early November. Also included is an interview with Spencer star Kristen Stewart, where she talks about making the film and portraying such an iconic character.

Island on the Edge: Taiwan New Cinema and After
Island on the Edge This is an English-language anthology on the Taiwan New Cinema and its legacy. It is a collection that covers all the major filmmakers from Hou Hsiao Hsien and Edward Yang to Ang Lee and more and it gathers a range of essays that analyze individual films produced since the advent of the Taiwan New Cinema in the early 1980s.

Introduction to a special issue on Taiwanese-language films (taiyupian)
In this introduction, the guest editors discuss briefly the context of organising this special issue, the approach of each paper takes, and how they are collectively related to the existing literature of Taiwanese-language films (taiyupian). The guest editors also explain the screening tour of selected taiyupian in the United Kingdom (UK) and Europe between 2017 and 2019, which became possible because of support and cooperation of many institutions in Taiwan, the UK and Europe.

Karen Gabay

Karen Gabay is a TV producer, podcast host & producer, exhibition curator, award winning film maker and radio presenter of one of the BBC’s longest running radio shows, The People which airs weekly on BBC Radio Manchester. Reporting and producing features on music, the arts, film, social affairs and sport for local & network radio. Karen has a broad portfolio. Radio credits include reporting for BBC5 Live and BBC England. She is especially interested in developing pieces that celebrate nostalgia, memory, American social affairs and pop culture.

Rachel Hayward

 

Andy Willis 

Andy Willis is a Professor of Film Studies at the University of Salford. He is also Senior Visiting Curator for Film at HOME where he has curated seasons on a variety of subjects including Hong Kong crime films, the actor Albert Finney, and European Political thrillers. He is also one of the programmers for the Viva: Spanish and Latin American film festival.

Chris Berry

Chris Berry is Professor of Film Studies at King’s College London. In the 1980s, he worked for China Film Import and Export Corporation in Beijing, and his academic research is grounded in work on Sinitic-language cinemas. His work on Taiwan cinema includes co-editing the anthology of essays Island on the Edge: Taiwan New Cinema and After. In 2017, together with Ming-Yeh Rawnsley, he launched the “Taiwan’s Lost Commercial Cinema: Recovered and Restored” project about Taiwanese-language cinema, and in 2020 they co-edited a special issue of Journal of Chinese Cinemas on the topic, vol.14, no.2.
