Primary Drama Festival 2011

Last week two local primary schools took part in our Primary Drama Festival. Year 6 pupils from St. Philip’s Primary School in Hulme and St. Mary’s Primary School in Moss Side took to the stage at the Zion Arts Centre to perform pieces they had devised during in-school workshops throughout the summer term. The children developed their performances, which included film, poetry and movement, around the classic novel Alice in Wonderland, imagining their own dream world below the rabbit hole. Each class had the chance to work with our team of technicians to perfect their pieces before showing them to an audience of parents and staff. Having worked separately on their performances throughout the term it was an exciting time for each class as they got to meet each other and share their work in a professional theatre. As the Year 6’s are also preparing to go to secondary school in September it was a great opportunity for them to meet others that were going to the same school.

The theme for the festival was inspired by our partnership with Manchester Children’s Book Festival whose aim is to encourage reading amongst children and increase literacy levels through fun and interactive events across the city. Some of the children’s poetry has also been entered into the All Write! Competition run by members of the MCBF at Manchester Metropolitan University and you can read then using the link on this page. A big thank you to everyone that was involved in the project and we wish every success to the Year 6’s as they start their new life at secondary school.
