LiveWire Film Critic Sarah Martin reviews We are the Best!…
We are the Best! is a film about three rebellious young girls living in the 1980’s, who are determined to bring Punk back to life by forming an all-girl Punk band. Despite the dismissal of the judgemental boys and the unfortunate fact that initially they do not sound very good, they refuse to let anything stand in their way. They soon recruit their shy yet musically talented schoolmate who, like the other girls, is an outcast.
The film is an adaptation of the graphic novel, written by the director’s wife, Coco Moodysson it has a delightful comical streak that thrills the audience and certainly returns anyone watching back to their childhood.
We are the Best! is directed by Sweden’s Lukas Moodysson, and he has successfully regained his comical side by making a film that thrives on the hilarity of youth humour and the strength of feminism in our younger years.
The acting in the film is brilliant and well-executed. The lead female roles are played by the talented Mira Barkhammar, Mira Grosin and Liv LeMoyne, and they have all brought their characters to life brilliantly. They all have an individual style and are fascinating to watch; they are all undoubtedly Sweden’s newest and upcoming stars.
Overall I believe that We are the Best! will appeal to many, especially those who love a film filled with fun, laughter and mischievous acts. It is ideal for family-viewing and would appeal to both the younger members but also the older members too. It was a delight to watch and therefore I definitely recommend it to all.
