December Highlights

As we head into the festive season, there’s lots going on at Cornerhouse to keep you entertained – we’ve selected some highlights below –  as well as some suggestions for special Christmas gifts.

We’ve got a host of films to keep the whole family entertained over the Christmas period, including a selection of festival favourites screening as part of our Winter Wonderland season. From much loved feel good classics such as It’s a Wonderful Life and An Affair to Remember, to more modern cult favourites including, Christmas comedy Elf and Tim Burton’s magical Edward Scissorhands, there’s sure to be something for everyone to enjoy! What’s more, with every Winter Wonderland film ticket purchased you can also take advantage of our special Café offer and treat yourself to a glass of mulled wine or an orange hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows, plus a mini chocolate yule log or mince pie for only £3.95 – the perfect excuse to take a break from Christmas shopping and treat yourself. For more festive family entertainment we can also recommend the Library Theatre’s magical Arabian Nights. This enthralling and funny production is staged at The Lowry now until Sat 12 January.

If you’re on the hunt for Christmas presents, then you might want to check out our annual Art Book Sale on Mon 3 December. With a wide range of contemporary visual art titles on offer at bargain prices, this event is always really popular – we recommend getting there early. For any theatre fans in your life, why not buy some tickets for our January NT Live screening of
The Magistrate? A Cornerhouse membershipwould also makes a great gift for the film and art lover in your life, and don’t forget to pop into our bookshop while you’re here to stock up on cards and gift wrap, as well as some great stocking filler books.

If the hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping has left you feeling worn out, then visit our galleries to get some art therapy courtesy of artist David Shrigley. His witty, interactive exhibition HOW ARE YOU FEELING? offers you the chance to take a nap on a couch, bang a gong, or contribute your own ‘life drawing’ to our walls, as well as featuring a host of the artist’s own drawings. Also look out for our current Cornerhouse Project from Manchester-based artist Fraser Chapman in our café bar – all the works in the exhibition are for sale if you see one that would look good on your own walls!

New releases to look out for in December include gripping new drama The Hunt, which features an accomplished performance from Mads Mikkelsen as a teacher falsely accused of abuse by one of his pupils; and Boxing Day, an absorbing drama which stars Matthew Jacobs as a troubled chauffeur who is faced with an enormous decision when his drive to the Rocky mountains with real-estate prospector Basil becomes potentially fatal.

And don’t forget to sign up to our weekly e-newsletter to keep up to date with our busy programme of films, events and exhibitions. Happy holidays!
