Putting the character into 140 Characters

It’s not long until the curtain goes up on norfox’s brand new show 140 Characters. Directors Elisa and Rosie fill us in on how the show is coming together…

Although the 14 characters in 140 Characters have been given the same names of the young actors who play them, they are most definitely not the same people. It’s amazing how changing certain facts about yourself can create a whole new personality with a whole new set of passions and problems.

At this stage in the rehearsal process everything is developing at a such a pace that it can be difficult to keep hold of the work that was the starting point of our process so we try to do a task everyday that will keep the actors tuned in to their characters. Today we asked them to write a Facebook status for their character. Here’s what they came up with:

Tom: Here’s a good way to kill a friendship: Take one of your best mates on a date to Pizza Hut. Why do things have to be so complicated?

Juanaya: Charelle!!! Why are you ignoring me? You’re my best mate. Whatever or whoever has come between us, I wish you’d just forget them and trust me like you used to.

Ruby: I hate it when people act like they are better than you when they are clearly not.

Sam: I know everyone hates me since the school trip was cancelled, but how many times do I have to say it before you guys believe me? It was NOT me that flooded the school toilets!

Ria: I love listening to music. I’m not that into modern music. I love to hang around with my mates.

Are you intrigued? Then why not come along to the show and find out how things work out for this group of friends.

140 Characters runs at Capitol Theatre Fri 12 Apr – Sat 13 Apr 2013. You can book tickets online here or from Cornerhouse Box Office on 061 200 1500.
