A middle-aged prominent businessman decides to take on a third wife much to the annoyance of his other wives and his daughter, a radical nationalist. Unfortunately there is a humiliating discovery on his wedding night as finds he has become impotent (what he believes to be the result of xala, an ancient Senegalese curse) and stands to lose his social standing. Exploring issues of postcolonial politics, multiculturalism and institutionalised corruption this is a cutting and satirical comedic depiction of the Senegalese bourgeoisie. Widely regarded as Ousmane Sembene’s finest filmic achievement.

Xala screens in connection with We Face Forward, Manchester’s dazzling season of concerts, exhibitions and events featuring West Africa’s greatest artists and musicians. For full information and listings visit: wefaceforward.org
