Winfried (Simonischek) is a divorced retiree who delights in persistent pranks and impersonations that alienate everyone in his German suburb. He is also estranged from his daughter, Ines (Sandra Hüller), a high-ranking management consultant who is as controlled and rigid as her father is impish. Alert to the nuances of social interaction, Ines is a master of the corporate world. When her father pays her a surprise visit, the result is excruciating.
The third feature film by German director Maren Ade is a captivating and moving tale of embarrassment and redemption. Faultlessly performed and funny as hell, it is worthy of each and every accolade heaped upon it.
