A frustrated and grieving mother (McDormand, giving a superlative performance) antagonises her local police force to call attention to the lack of progress in the search for her daughter’s killer, in the latest from Martin McDonagh (In Bruges). Infused with McDonagh’s trademark dark humour and flashes of violence and simmering tension, the film mixes a potent cocktail of grief, sexism, racism and resilience to startling effect.
