The Night of the Hunter

The only film directed by British actor Charles Laughton, The Night of the Hunter is a haunting thriller set in West Virginia. Harry Powell, a preacher-turned-serial killer, arrives at the residence of hung criminal Ben Harper with a plan to steal the dead man’s fortune from his widow and children. Blending realism with German expressionism and with a charged script written by James Agee, Laughton’s film profits from a career-best performance by Robert Mitchum.
