Hsiao Kang is a single father who scratches out a living holding up signboards in busy roads. His two children spend their days in supermarkets before eating with their father and sleeping in an abandoned building. A worker in the supermarket starts to take the children under her wing. There are also real stray dogs for her to feed. We come to know these characters, and something of their history, a time when they indeed had a home, a mother, a very different sort of life.
