Talking Shop

We invite everyone who makes, watches, or cares about the local theatre scene to an afternoon of Open Space discussion. You set the agenda, you decide what happens. The only rules are:

  • Whoever comes are the right people
  • Whatever happens is the only thing that could have happened
  • Whenever it starts is the right time
  • When it’s over, it’s over.

This is a great opportunity for everyone who works in theatre in Manchester and Salford and cares about its future to join in a conversation about the state of it here and beyond. There’s no doubt that this is a key time for the industry. There are significant changes of leadership happening in the region’s companies ; at the Royal Exchange, at the Library (soon to be part of HOME), at Contact, and at The Lowry Studio. The Manchester International Festival is back, as is Not Part Of, and we’ve just seen the first ever Manchester Fringe Festival.
And all this is in a bleak national context of austerity, with threats to funding, declining income from sponsorship, and pressure on the customer’s leisure spend.
So this is your chance to have your say about what matters. The conversation will use Open Space practice, so the agenda will be set by you, the facilitated session will be open-ended, and notes from the proceedings will subsequently be circulated to all participants.
