Too Much is a celebration of film melodrama: the cinematic method associated heightened emotions, formal extravagance, and – of course – romance. From November to January, HOME presents a season of tear-jerking, eye-popping and breath-taking cinema.
We begin with two films showcasing the great James Mason in his formidable acting prime. Mason returns later in the season where he meets his match in Margaret Lockwood: the first, wicked lady of British melodrama, who starred in a string of classics produced by Gainsborough Pictures in the 1940s.
Throughout December, we present a series of not-so-merry melodramas spotlighting the work of the great Hollywood director Douglas Sirk alongside the films of one of his greatest admirers - doyen of the New German Cinema, Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
Too much? Never! Also screening are reissues of Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025, and Sirk’s wintertime classic, All that Heaven Allows.
The season ends with a bang as The Wind – a masterpiece of Hollywood’s late silent era – is brought vividly to life by acclaimed accompanist Stephen Horne.
