Director Max Ophüls had forged a notable career in Germany before fleeing the Nazis and building a reputation for creating visually stylish films in Hollywood.

The Reckless Moment sees him fashioning a film that blends elements of melodrama and film noir to create a story of a suburban housewife who covers up a murder to protect her teenage daughter, only to find herself being blackmailed.
