James Mason, who serves as both star and producer of the film, had grand ambitions for Bigger Than Life – and so he turned to director Nicholas Ray.
By that point, Ray had created some of the finest films produced in Hollywood in the 1950s. Many of these drew on the codes and conventions of the film melodrama, such as Johnny Guitar (1954) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955).
Whilst not appreciated at the time, this tale of a public school teacher fighting the pressures of life in 1950s America is now considered something of a classic, and was championed by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut.
