Mamoru is a shy, introverted welfare department caseworker, impassively carrying out duties such as sanctioning fraudulent claimants due to pressure from his office superiors.

One day, his colleague Yuko discovers that fellow caseworker Yoji is coercing a single mother, Aimi, for sex in exchange for welfare benefits. Having reluctantly agreed with Yuko to help uncover the truth, Mamoru starts visiting Aimi whose living situation is even more complicated than it first seemed. Without truly knowing her, Mamoru gradually forms a personal relationship with Aimi, only to find himself trapped in a nightmarish summer - one that builds to a shocking and unforgettable climax.

Directed by veteran filmmaker Hideo Jojo (Twilight Cinema Blues), A Bad Summer is an explosive, emotive drama that weaves together satirical analysis of Japan’s social structure and psychological tension with devastating precision.
