A middle-class Austrian family lead seemingly happy lives together. But, over the course of three years, their mundane day-to-day routines slowly unravel.

As they become alienated from the world around them and each other, the family stands on the precipice of total disintegration.

Michael Haneke’s debut feature, The Seventh Continent, lays out the thematic and formal framework that would inform much of his later work. The filmmaker’s tightly-controlled fury and his unflinching focus on the breakdown of bourgeois society, violence and the media are all boldly on display here.
