Cal (15)

One of cinema’s most significant depictions of The Troubles.

Cal, a young Catholic living in 1970s Northern Ireland, finds himself drawn into Republican violence when he takes on the role of driver for an assassination mission against a member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
After beginning a fraught affair with Marcella, a widow living with her murdered husband’s Protestant family, Cal learns that his dark past and Marcella’s present pain may be linked.

Made and released at the height of The Troubles, Cal remains one of cinema’s most significant depictions of the conflict. Brilliantly acted, sensitively attuned to the human tragedy of Northern Ireland’s divided communities, and set to a beautiful score from Mark Knopfler, this is a powerful drama – now newly remastered and long overdue for rediscovery.
