A retired school teacher and young boy become unlikely travelling companions when the boy is suddenly orphaned and must find his estranged father.  

Embittered and living alone, Dora, who transcribes letters for illiterate people and pockets the money without sending the notes, meets nine-year-old Josué just before his mother is killed in an accident.  

After much deliberation, Dora reluctantly embarks on a journey through northern Brazil with Josué in search of his family.

Eschewing sentimentality to become a moving study of unlikely connection, this is the film that thrust Walter Salles onto the international stage.
