We filter Caste through Fraiberg et al: Ghosts in the Nursery. ‘In every nursery there are ghosts. Visitors from the unremembered past of the parents.’ The 8 pillars of caste are ghosts in a *half-caste baby’s nursery.

  1.  Divine Will and Laws of Nature. We should never have been born.
  2. Heritability. We can’t inherit anything.
  3.  Endogamy and the Control of Marriage and Mating. Our parents shouldn’t have had sex.
  4.  Purity versus Pollution. Our birth pollutes our white parent.
  5.  Occupational Hierarchy. There’s a ceiling on posts we can occupy.
  6.  Dehumanization and Stigma. Do mixed-race people do this to themself?
  7. Terror as Enforcement, Cruelty as a Means of Control. Lynching black men often happened because of a perceived slight of a white woman. Yet we are the product of a black man and a white woman.
  8.  Inherent Superiority versus Inherent Inferiority.

We hope together to unearth the ghosts and their impact.
